		<description>THE ALLUVIUM SERIES

“Alluvium - the geological term for the deposits of sand and silt left behind by floodwater as it flows in a river valley or delta, typically producing fertile soil. “

I was invited to take part in exploring the connection between art, design and industry as part of Kohler’s residency program. The factory is known for its enamel-coated cast iron sinks and bathtubs, the fabrication of which is a trade secret developed over two centuries.

“Alluvium” is a series of decorative bowls that are made of enamel-coated, sand-cast iron. With the help of professional staff on the factory floor, I explored the methods and special techniques that distinguish Kohler’s process. Taking inspiration from the way water streams through Kohler’s products, I used water in this project to create a unique, natural pattern, by sifting a second coat of enamel powder on the surface, and dribbling water to create artificial streams that carry away the enamel grains. The bowls are then heated for the final time to affix the pattern of trickling channels and tributaries. The result is a combination of my prior experience in enamelwork with Kohler’s technology in a way that expands the boundaries of the process and its possibilities.

Created in Arts/Industry, a long-term residency program of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Inc. Arts/Industry takes place at Kohler Co factory

		<description>PUDDLE I

A decorative sphere acts as a vase, sitting on a multi-coloured, cast glass base.
These glass ‘puddles’ tell the story of a liquid solidifying into choreographed, organic shapes. The colours overlap and intermix due to the translucent nature of the material, demonstrating the pouring process and emphasizing the optic qualities of glass. The sphere and the base create a scene, a snapshot of something as it is forming. This captures the moment when glass transitions from an epic, violent gushing liquid to a tamed yet inherently fragile shape.

		<description>PUDDLE II
These decorative bowls were made by pouring hot coloured glass onto a flat surface, and then picking them up on a rod and forming it while hot. This process alters traditional glass blowing methods and adds new interpretations to the craft.

The glass ‘puddles’ in various colours tell the story of a liquid solidifying into choreographed, organic shapes. The colours overlap and intermix due to the translucent nature of the material, demonstrating the pouring process and emphasizing the optic qualities of glass. This collection examines the fluidity of glass and the free setting of matter, playing with a fine balance of disciplined and accidental results.

Nowadays, kitchens are becoming an open space joined with the living room, and are transformed from being just a working space to a hosting area as well. This has a great effect on the way we choose kitchen tools and how we display them. A tool can then become a decorative object as well, thereby questioning the way we perceive function and form. These citrus squeezers are made of glass with multiple colours, revealed by cold-working to “peel off” the layers, much like the fruit it squeezes. The inner bubble makes it lighter and easier to hold, and the outer layer is sand-blasted for better grip.

A three part set of brass jewelry that celebrates the aesthetics of food. The set includes a ring, a bracelet and a hair comb pin. It is designed to hold edible (and non-edible) elements on it, allowing you to appreciate the ornamental value of food. It changes our prescriptive on beauty, decor, and functionality, replacing precious jams with perishable fashionable delicacies like edible flowers and berries for instance. These elements of beauty can then be consumed or offered to others. However, the set is designed to work with or without the embellishments.

		<description>MARBLIZATION

Inspired by the natural formation of gems and precious stones, I use the glass technique of marbling with various colours, and then cut and polish the glass to resemble natural crystal outcrops. This project creates a hybrid of rock and gemstone that is purely crafted.

		<description>SHIFTING SANDS
Seeking to explore the origins of glass, my work refers to the elements glass is comprised of. Initially my intention was to collect varieties of sand from a unique geological feature in the desert where I grew up. I reminisced about a childhood experience where we’d fill old glass bottles with layers of coloured sand to resemble the crater’s stratified earth. However, I found out that the site is now a reservation prohibiting soil collection, in part because of its archeological importance. In contemplating the dwindling of natural resources, I considered how natural elements can be crafted. I fused layers of glass powder using ceramic moulds, inspired by the glass bottles of my childhood. This produces objects that evoke futuristic artificial elements of nature and the processes of natural formation.

		<description>DUST TO DUST
Some believe that one of the ways to eliminate the broken mirror’s curse is to smash it to tiny pieces so it could no longer reflect its surroundings and it becomes neutralized and without function. The mirror returns to be in its raw material stage and thus symbolizes the life and death cycle of an object.

Designed for the the "Violent Object" exhibition.

Four stackable bowls nested in each other like the layers of an onion.
The onion sphere in glass blowing is a fundamental shape, but it is a diagonal cut that creates this teardrop silhouette.
